Principally Speaking

Welcome to another September! We are already one month into the school year!

Common Core State Standards are being implemented this year with a new math curriculum called My Math in grades K-5 and CPM in 6th grade. Designing and applying mathematical models to solve practical and abstract situations are depth of knowledge goals of common core.
For English Language Arts,  the focus is  on students gathering evidence, knowledge and insight from what they read in literature, social studies, science and math.  Analyzing text, investigating meaning and seeking details will assist students to assess patterns in writing and to consider what text leaves uncertain or unstated.
Parental  involvement strengthens the school program and demonstrates the value placed on education. There are many ways to become involved at our school.  SSC (School Site Council) meets the first Thursday of each month in the mornings from 8:15-9:15 in the school library.  (Sept. 4th) The purpose is to elicit input for school improvement and to take a look at how we are doing with our goals for the year. Parents get an insight on our total school program, events and activities.  September’s meeting is combined with our ELAC English Learner Advisory  Committee. Parents of English Language Learners are invited to take a look at how we are addressing our EL students and are invited to attend district meetings and classroom settings.

PTO is new this year. This group is called PAWS -  They are an enthusiastic group with many plans and ideas for our school, some revolving around raising funds for assemblies, supplies and special events and/or purchases.  PTO usually meets the second Thursday of the month at 6:00 in the school library. Parents may attend all or some meetings, and/or help with scheduled events. The next meeting is September 11th.
As always,  parent volunteers in the classroom are appreciated as are field trip chaperones and parents willing to help in the student store during school hours.

Our Leader In Me goal this year is to have more special events for parents.
